Last Day I had found out the site which is giving away 1000 free icons. All of them are included under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license All these icons you can use as commercial purpose for free to any website. Icons are of very high quality you can use it anywhere you want them to be.

Reasons that can degrade your wordpress site performance:

• Include jquery multiple times
• Include flash more than 4 to 5 times on a single page ( its too much )
• Include large unoptimized images
• Site requests for more http requests from same domain
• Slow web hosting server
• Always generate dynamic images and not catching for subsequent requests
• Messed up Code
• Embed media that is coming from other servers ( can load the site slow )
• @import for including style sheets will call function for stylesheet include
• Uncompressed content from server side
• Use of trailing slashes for folders

You can improve site performance with following precautions.

1) Minify Your Javascript and CSS Resources:

The best way to reduce the size of these resources is to minify them. Now, What is the meaning of minify?  You need to remove unwanted space available in these css and java-script files. Here is the example to understand the minify. Mind you readers, this can dramatically reduce your page loading time. Many plugins available in wordpress plugin repository, that can serve your purpose.

2) Reduce unwanted calls to database

Every Single call to database is count and measured in high performance websites. You can reduce database calls from header and footer file codes. You generally do not need to modify header and footer files frequently. Once you have completed header and footer then your set. What these function calls do, they will just generate HTML codes. So you need to put HTML part directly instead of that function call. Here is the example, how to do it.

3) Check your web-host speed performance

This precaution can be very crucial for decreased optimized site loading time. Please check your web hosting provider. You can check your site speed with these website speed measure tools from Pingdom Tools, Web Hosting Top, Vertain Software

4) Use Separate style-sheets

Please do not use inline styles. This can degrade your site performance. It will take much time to render your codes and separate your css styles from the code. Use external Css and Java-scripts files to include your style sheets and java-script.

5) Don’t use large pages, split it into two parts

If  you are writing an article and that span more and more then split that article into two pages as a separate article like part1 and part2. This will reduce a half of the page loading time and visitors wont go away frustrating with low page loading time.

6) Combine your Css files into single file

You can add your different css files into one file. That can save your microseconds.

7) Use Css sprite generators

You can use this tool for generate css sprite. This can be a large image including collection of all the images. This can reduce the use of images. With a single image you can serve multiple images. You just need to provide set of images and it will generate css sprites with single image.

Use Offloading ( CDN – Content Delivery Network )

<em> HTTP/1.1 Specification suggests that browsers download no more than two components in parallel per hostname. – From Yahoo Performance Rules</em>

Request your content images, css and java-script files from another server is named as Offloading. This can proved to be a key point to your site performance. Generally our websites can get 2 resource at a time for a single request. So, if we need to get 8 resource ( css, images, or any content ) from server, then we need to make 4 calls to server. But instead of this, what if your resources are split between two servers separately, means 4 files reside on one server and remaining 4 files are on different server then this files we can get with only 2 server calls. Which can reduce 2 server calls. I have explained this in mathematics terms.

Example:

Total 8 images on server.com ( 2 images  = 1 call  so 8 images = 4 calls for server.com )
Total 8 images : 4 on static1.server.com AND 4 on static2.server.com ( 2 calls for server1 AND  server2 at Same Time )
This will save us 2 calls. What if images more than 400 or 500 on different servers. SO, many server calls can be saved and this will improve server performance.

There are many public offloading service sites available. You can probabely check Akamai Technologies, Mirror Image Internet, or Limelight Networks. Edge Cast, Coral Content Distribution Network, Velocix Accelerator, CDN Expert Online, CDNetworks

9) Reduce Http Requests for Resources

The more number of http requests, the more page take times to load. So, if we can cache the content of the page, we can be able to reduce subsequent http requests to the server. This can also be done in wordpress widgets. Each and every time widget PHP script is try to execute and produce html output. If we can cache widget output then its possible to reduce http requests. You can fulfill this tweak with wp widget cache plugin and many more available cached plugins from wordpress plugin repository.

10) Merge Css files

You can save your css files code to a single file for faster execution and loading to memory. This can save your microseconds.
You can use wordpress modules to do this trick.

11) Use Http Compression Methods

I There is wordpress plug-in available named Wp Http Compression. This plug-in allows your wordpress blog to output pages compressed in Gzip format if a browser supports compression.

12) Put Scripts at the end and css at the top of your Document, to load fast

When script is downloading, browser will not allow system to download other resources. So, if it first starts downloading then other resources will be in halt mode and that time cycle will waste. So, in order to download resources fast you need to move your javascript files at the end of the document.

13)  Don’t use both <link> and @import for including for style-sheets

Based on analysis between link and @import funciton for including stylesheets, link has been the winner of the battle between these two. Where I have use @import and link both in a single doc, they just block parallel resource download. There are sample cases for the use of these @import and link tags.

Case1: Use @imort two times Result: will download parallel

Based on these results, we can see that for faster resource download we need to

14) Don’t use height & width for images in document

Use images without static scale. Don’t use Height and Width attribute to scale images, if they are big and you want to scale them just crop them and display in cropped dimension.

Example:

W Source Image is of 300 px by 300 px and you wanted to display it as if it is of 200 by 200 px
Wrong: <img src=”/images/image_name.jpg” width=”200″ height=”200″ border=”0″/>
Right: crop/resize your actual image to 200 by 200 px and display <img src=”/images/image_name.jpg” border=”0″ />

15) Use favicon

If your site does not find favicon.ico file then 404 not found exception will be generated for each and every request. This can also be reduce your site performance. So, include favicon for your site.

16) Use Cached Contents

Caching can dramatically improve your site performance from 50 to 80 percent with Caching Plugins. There are many caching plugins available in wordpress plugin repository. <em>WP Super Cache</em> is my favorite plug-in for site caching. This plugin will generate static html files from our dynamic wordpress data. For each subsequent server request it will check for the change in page, if page is changed then it will process PHP script and generate html files and serves else it will serve html files to not logged in users, users who have not commented to the post, and users who have not viewed password protected post.
